it’s technically not correct to say “$f(x)$ is a function”; it should be “$f$ is a function.”

$f$ 是一个函数（√）

$f(x)$ 是一个函数（×）

a function must assign a unique output for each valid input.

函数：每一个有效输入指定唯一的输出（一一对应）

The codomain is a set of possible outputs, while the range is the set of actual outputs.

设 $f$ 是从始集 $X$ 到终集 $Y$ 的关系，$f$ 的定义域 $D(G)$ 为 $X$，且对任何 $x \in X$ 都有惟一的 $y\in Y$ 满足 $f(x,y)$，则称 $f$ 为 $X \to Y$ 的映射
